Experience with the Role Adaptation of Shift Working Nurses after Department Rotation

Abstract
Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to explore the experience with the role adaptation of nurses performing shift work after they experienced department rotation.

Methods: The participants were 12 nurses. The data were collected through individual in-depth and focus group interviews. The transcribed interview data were analyzed based on the grounded theory method of Strauss and Corbin.
Results: Axial coding based on the paradigm model showed that the central phenomenon of shift-working nurses¡¯ experience with role adaptation after department rotation was ¡°Facing the unfamiliar¡±, and the core category was extracted as ¡°Refreshing me with new learning¡±. The nurses¡¯ role adaptation after department rotation was phased in with the use of action/interaction strategies, consisting of five phases: exploration, confrontation, struggling, integration, and expansion. The participants utilized various strategies such as ¡°Getting ready beforehand¡±, ¡°Seeking connection¡±, ¡°Being humble and learning newly¡±, ¡°Trusting the power of time and enduring¡±, and ¡°Struggling to stand on my own feet¡±.

Conclusion: The in-depth understanding of the experience of shift-working nurses¡¯ role adaptation after department rotation provides the basis for developing strategies to improve professionalism and job satisfaction through department rotation.
